My name is Janice Thompson, and I am the founder of Upstate Photo Solutions. I truly believe that photos help us create stronger bonds with the past and with each other.
In 2006 I inherited a whole lot of photos and albums from my father who had received them from his parents. They were in no particular order and many of the photographs weren’t identified, but they dated back to the mid-1800s. I’m sad to say that they languished in boxes for many years, along with my own photo collection. At the time, I was raising my sons and working at a career I loved, and my photo collection just wasn’t a priority.
Until I downsized, that is. Suddenly I had to make decisions about what to do with all of this ephemera. I had no place to put this collection as it was and was unable to just throw all of it out. My sons weren’t interested in random boxes of photos, so I couldn’t just pass the mess on to them. Does that sound familiar?
I avoided this part of my house because every time I saw it, I felt terrible. I decided that I was going to organize and digitize this mess so that I could keep the best of the best with me. During the process, I learned a lot about what NOT to do and how to get things organized and found I absolutely loved this work.
It’s all organized by date and by event. I can put my hands on any picture in my collection quickly and easily. The very best photos have been digitized and I’ve shared them with my extended family.
That’s when I realized that many people may be in the same boat, needing help curating and digitizing their own photos and memorabilia. I’d love to help you gather, digitize and preserve your own family’s photographs and create a searchable archive that will live on.
